What does daviD goggins and morita therapy have in common?

In my continual exploration to develop mental fortitude and personal growth, I discovered an intriguing and surprising connection between the philosophy of ultramarathon runner and former Navy SEAL, David Goggins, and the principles of Morita Therapy. While these two figures may seem to be worlds apart, a common thread of acceptance of discomfort and purposeful action weaves through their respective approaches.

David Goggins, renowned for his extraordinary feats, advocates for pushing past physical and mental barriers, being driven by purpose even in the presence of negative self-talk and unhelpful feelings. He openly admits he often doesn’t feel like running, but runs anyway (even after staring at his shoes for 30- minutes) because it's so important to him. In a similar vein, Morita Therapy accepts and co-exists with emotions rather than denying or suppressing them, encouraging individuals to take purposeful action, even in the face of challenging emotions.

This synergy lies in their shared emphasis on being driven by purpose as opposed to feelings. Goggins and Morita Therapy both underscore the significance of accepting and coexisting with difficult feelings but not being dictated by them, embracing discomfort, and taking purposeful action despite the difficult feelings.

One may be more physically extreme than the other, but both share a similar message of living a purposeful, action-orientated life..
